Don't underestimate the commitment

Blogging is a great way to build your brand and promote your business online. It is an easy way to get a conversation going with your customers. It is also a good place to promote new and existing products or services.

But blogging takes time and commitment.

Don't underestimate the time you will need to put in to make your blog successful. Blogging is not a magic trick where you write a few times and suddenly every customer is beating a path to your door. It is a long term process where you build a rapore and nurture a community, build trust and develop friendships. This can take months.

It's easy to look at other blogs and immediately see that the success they enjoy is desirable and to want in on the action. Most successful blogs have been going consistently for 6 months or more.

Plan your blogging

Set aside an amount of time on a consistent basis. This could be every day, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday or just once a week. Whatever works for you. Put this time in your diary and commit to writing something in every time slot. Make sure that you can commit to this amount of time for a full 6 months. Rather start slower than too fast as you can always increase the frequency later. Remember to also allocate enough time to answer questions and respond to comments on your blog, bearing in mind that comment frequency will increase over the life of your blog.

Having a dedicated time for blogging will help ensure that other things don't take up your time, leaving your blog untouched for days.

Hey, even I battle with this. According to my plan, I should have posted this by 09:00 this morning but things get in the way.

The time commitment for blogging is definitely a challenge - I suspect one that every blogger faces, even people who have been doing it for many months (or years.)
I like the idea of trying to blog at the same time every day - perhaps writing at one point, letting a post sit, go back, edit and publish...

As someone who has only been blogging for jsut over a month I can certainly identify with some of the things you've outlined above.
I really do try to have something to post at least once a day to keep things regular for readers and found having some drafts prepared is good to do.
I think my main issue right now, is I need to get a day or two ahead of myself in writing my posts, right now I'm not posting till after 6pm on an evening, not ideal I'm sure.
Thanks for the tips though!

I tend to type up outlines every time I have an idea and then focus on writing every morning.
I've thought of writing ahead of schedule but haven't implemented it yet.
Ben, I think the idea of writing at least one day ahead and then letting the post sit overnight is a great idea.
